Camera obscura (Lat. 'dark room') A dark- ened box with a hole (or lens) in one side which casts an image of the object onto a ground glass screen or a sheet of paper, which can then be traced. Canalctto used the device to make studies for his paintings. (A photographic camera works on the same principle, throwing the image onto a light-sensitive surface which retains it.)
