Combine painting An extension of the principle of collage, in that flat or three- dimensional objets trouves are attached to the surface of the composition, and are sometimespainted over, sometimes left in their natural state. The term was invented by the AmericanRobert Rauschenberg (see neo-dada), whohas made combine paintings incorporating such things as stuffed animals and fully functional radios. It is a short step from a combinepainting to an environment.
