Colour-field painting Fainting using compositional devices which suggest that the field of colour stretches beyond the canvas to infinity. There are no strong contrasts of tone, and figure and ground are given equal value. (See figure-ground relationship.) Though usually extremely large, colour-field paintings are nevertheless designed to be viewed at close quarters so that they occupy the whole of the spectator's field of vision. The term covers some aspects of abstract expressionism (found in the paintings of such artists as Ad Rcmhardt, Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman) and the work of the generation which followed and achieved prominence in the late 1950s- Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski.
