Harmonic proportions A system of architectural proportions evolved by renaissance architects who saw an analogy with the way sounds are produced on stringed instruments. For example, if two strings, one half the length of the other, are vibrated, then the difference in pitch will be an octave. If the ratio is 2:3 the difference is a fifth; and if it is 3:4 the difference is a fourth. The suggestion was that buildings constructed according to these musical ratios would inevitably be harmonious to the eye. See also Golden Section.
