ŞEKİL VE ZEMİN İLİŞKİSİ (FIGURE GROUND RELATIONSHIP)

Şekil-zemin ilişkisi Bir resimde bir nesnenin veya şeklin onu gördüğümüz arka planla olan ilişkisi. İnsan algısı normalde öyle bir şekilde çalışır ki 'figür' ilerliyormuş gibi görünür ve arka planda yer alır. Ancak bazen, özellikle 'figür' ve 'arka plan'ın yaklaşık olarak aynı miktarda alanı kapladığı soyut sanatta, ilişki karışır ve böylece arka plan, eserin konusu için eşit önem kazanır.

Figure-ground relationship In a painting, the way in which an object or shape is related to the background against which we see it. Human perception normally operates in such a way that the 'figure' seems to advance, and lie in front of the background. Sometimes, however, especially with abstract art where the 'figure' and the 'background' occupy approximately the same amount ofspace, the relationship becomes confused, so that the background assumes equal importance to the subject of the work.
