Mücevheratta kullanılan dört 'asil' değerli taştan biri - elmas, safir, zümrüt, yakut - ve bazı durumlarda mineralojik olarak benzer olan topaz, ametist veya akuamarin gibi diğer değerli taşlardan doğası gereği daha değerli olduğu kabul edilir.
