Typology The study of types of representation in iconography, particularly the study of the way in which figures and scenes from the Old Testament were thought to prefigure those found in the New. In the art of the Middle Ages, an Old Testament 'type' was often represented with, but subordinate to, its New Testament equivalent or 'antitype'.
